1. Person will be educated on the culture of youth gangs; including gang signs and symbols, body markings, graffiti, etc.
2. They will have a proper understanding of the impact the media plays in this culture.
3. They will have a proper understanding of prevention, intervention and suppression strategies that can be utilized.

Outline:

I. Introduction

Brief overview of gang involvement
a. Why youth join
b. Initiations
c. Updated gang identification training (colors, clothing, body marking’s, etc.)

III. Brief Gang history on East Coast
a. National Gangs (Bloods, Crips, ALKQN, etc.) vs. Local Hybrid gangs

IV. Media Influence
Movies, music, radio
DVD, magazines
Internet (myspace, youtube, etc.)

Prevention, Intervention, Suppression strategies
a. Community Involvement (Graffiti removal programs, faith based efforts, community ed. programs, etc.)
b. Role of schools, community agencies, youth facilities (Extended school days, Alternatives to suspensions, Teen Nights, etc.)
c. Suppression (Police, parole/probation, legislation targeting gangs, GRIPE, GREAT, etc.)
