Albany's Truancy Abatement Program, to be overseen by the Department of Youth and Workforce Services, has as its goals reduced truancy, reduced juvenile crime and increased parental responsibility.
The program is a collaborative effort involving the City, local schools, Albany County Probation, Albany Police Department and local community agencies. The administration of the program consists of police officers that patrol the streets of Albany and identify students who are not in school during regular school hours. School age youngsters who are not in school on a regular school day must have a legitimate reason for not being in attendance and must be prepared to show the appropriate documentation.
Students with a legitimate and documented reason for not being in school will be permitted to continue on their way. Both the parents and the school will be notified immediately when their child is brought to the Truancy Center and will be expected to come to the Center to meet with support staff and then to return their child to school. School and Truancy center staff will follow-up with apprppriate support services.
SCHOOL TUTORING PROGRAM:
Free tutoring is offered every Tuesday and Thursday after school. Students can get assistance in their school work and also be exposed to guest speakers, field trips, and extra curricular activities.
